This First Friday, Sevigny Studio PDX presents the opening night of Ancient Artifacts, a group exhibition by Crow Collective featuring work from 20 Portland-area artists. Members of the collective will be in the gallery throughout the evening, sharing the ideas, materials, and creative processes behind their work.

Expect an energetic night in the studio with live music, light refreshments, and a gallery full of new work to explore. First Friday is one of the best times to experience the space—when artists, collectors, and neighbors gather, conversations spark, and the art comes to life in person.

This April, Sevigny Studio PDX presents Ancient Artifacts, a group exhibition by Crow Collective, featuring work by 20 participating artists. Through imaginative interpretations of history, memory, and speculation about the future, the show explores a central question: what makes something an artifact?

The exhibition grew out of the collective’s exploration of time and reality.

What if ancient artifacts were objects left behind by forgotten civilizations on Earth, or perhaps even another world?

Looking forward in time, what if the objects we use today become the ancient relics of tomorrow?

How might future generations interpret modern toys and tools the way we now examine ancient Egyptian artifacts or archaeological ruins?

Some artists approached the theme through imagination and world-building, envisioning relics from unknown cultures or distant futures. Others explored the idea more personally, reflecting on pieces of their own past that shaped who they are today, moments that can feel almost ancient when viewed through the lens of growth and change. The theme also touches on the land itself, considering earlier landscapes and geological histories that existed long before the environments we recognize today.

Another aspect central to the exhibition is accessibility.

The Crow Collective intentionally emphasized affordability when creating this show, hoping the works on display will not only bring joy but also make it possible for visitors to take home a piece that resonates with them.

About Crow Collective

Crow Collective is made up of artists from across the United States who have found a creative home in the greater Portland area. The group takes its name from the large murders of crows that inhabit the Pacific Northwest: a fitting symbol for a gathering built around community and shared curiosity.

The collective was formed to create a positive environment for collaboration, mentoring, knowledge seeking, teamwork, and creative support among artists. By working together, members exchange ideas, encourage growth, and create opportunities for exhibitions like this one.
